How does Inspire treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

If you have obstructive sleep apnea and are not able to use continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP), there is a new device that might benefit you. This treatment is the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy system, which is an implantable device that can treat obstructive sleep apnea.

How the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy system works

The Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation system is an implantable device that works from inside of your body with your natural respiration process. The device is comprised of a generator, stimulation lead, and sensing lead. You can turn it on with a remote, and the device will provide mild stimulation to key muscles in your airway to keep it open while you are sleeping.

For people with obstructive sleep apnea, it is crucial for you to address it so you can ensure you keep breathing throughout the night. The device works with your natural respiration process to treat your sleep apnea. You won’t feel the stimulation of your airway muscles because the stimulation is mild, but it will be enough to keep your airway open while you are sleeping so that oxygen can continue to naturally flow. You will not have to deal with hoses, masks, or noise with the Inspire system.

Why Choose Inspire?

The Inspire therapy device is clinically proven and safe. Studies have shown that patients reported a reduction of sleep apnea events by 79%. Their partners reported an 88% reduction in their snoring, and 91% of patients reported being satisfied with the device.

An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. When obstructive sleep apnea is severe, it can also be life-threatening. People who do not adequately manage their sleep apnea have increased risks of stroke, heart attacks, high blood pressure, weight gain, and heart failure. While CPAP systems are effective, approximately 50% of patients who are prescribed CPAP are non-compliant with their treatment.

The Inspire implant is inserted under the skin during a short surgery and can often be performed in outpatient settings. It offers an easy way for people to comply with therapy while also enjoying better outcomes. The system is FDA-approved and has been shown to result in a significant reduction in sleep apnea events. When you get better sleep, you can also enjoy a better quality of life for both you and your loved ones. Since you won’t have to worry about noise, a hose, or a mask, you won’t have to worry about sleeping in a single position or dealing with a mask every night.

Who Benefits From Inspire Therapy?

The FDA approved Inspire therapy in 2014. Currently, 3,000 patients around the world use this system. It is designed for patients who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and who have been unable to derive benefits from or use CPAP systems. Patients who consider the Inspire device should also not be obese and should be over the age of 22.
